At the Royal Bafokeng Institute (RBI), we believe that no dream should be out of reach because of financial limitations. Our student loan programme is designed to support Royal Bafokeng Nation citizens who aspire to pursue undergraduate studies at public universities in North West and Gauteng Provinces only.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the RBI Student Loan, you must:
• Be a South African citizen and a bona fide Royal Bafokeng Nation member
• Demonstrate proven financial need based on household income
• Submit proof of NSFAS application or do so seven days after the NSFAS Application window for 2026 has opened
• Have an AP score of 30 or above, excluding Life Orientation

• Be accepted into an accredited public university in North-West and Gauteng Provinces

Application Process

  • Apply to a university of your choice in North-West and Gauteng Provinces as early as possible.
  • Download the RBI Student Loan Application Form or collect it at the RBI Campus in Phokeng.
  • Submit the completed form with the following documents:
    o Certified copy of your ID (not older than 3 months)
    o Grade 11 or 12 results (latest available)
    o Certified final Grade 12 results (if applicable)
    o Proof of NSFAS application
    o Academic transcript (for current university students)
    o Recommendation letter from your Kgosana
    o Parent’s payslip or affidavit if unemployed
    o University acceptance letter (required when finalising the loan)

Applications will be considered for the following fields of study:

• Health Sciences
Note: BSc in Medical Science and Acupuncture will not be supported.

• Bachelor of Commerce (BCom):
Only the following streams are supported:

  • Accountancy
  • Auditing

• Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.):
Only the following degrees offered by North-West University (NWU) will be supported:

  • Foundation Phase
  • Senior/FET Phase

Note: For B.Ed in Senior Phase, and in Further Education and Training Phases, the applicant must specialise in Mathematics and Physical Science or Accountancy or Technology or Engineering Drafts and Design or English/Setswana. (In other words, Mathematics is compulsory, while any of the subjects stated can be taken as a pair with Mathematics.)

Note: These B.Ed. degrees must be pursued only through the Akanyang Centre for Teaching in Phokeng.

• Bachelor of Arts (BA):

  • Social Work – supported only
  • Fine Arts – supported only if studied at a University of Technology

• Engineering – supported

• LLB (Bachelor of Laws) – supported
